Sapporo in 3 days: a first-timer's walking itinerary (2026)

Updated: November 2026

English · 한국어 · 简体 · 繁體

This is the route we would hand a friend visiting Sapporo for the first time. Each day is eight stops in walking order, timed so the busy places come before the tour groups and the viewpoints land near sunset. Prices were checked in November 2026; where a price is older or not published, we say so.

Day 1 · Central Sapporo & Susukino: Campus, red brick and a tower at sunset

A walking day on Sapporo's grid. Hokkaido University's campus in the morning, the reopened Red Brick Office and the wooden Clock Tower, a seafood lunch at Nijo Market, the covered Tanukikoji arcade, a stroll down Odori Park, sunset from the TV Tower and the neon of Susukino after dark.

1. 09:00–09:50

Hokkaido University campus

A wide green campus a few minutes from Sapporo Station, with the bust of Dr. William Clark, old wooden college buildings and tall elms and poplars.

Price: Free · Hours: Campus open in daytime · museum hours: check (free entry)

Tip: The ginkgo avenue (about 380 m, near the north gate) is golden in late October to early November; later in the month the leaves may have fallen. Pick up a campus map near the main gate and keep to paths: classes are in session.

2. 10:10–11:00

Former Hokkaido Government Office (Red Brick)

The neo-baroque red-brick home of Hokkaido's government from 1888, reopened in July 2025 after a long renovation, with exhibits on how Hokkaido was settled.

Price: ¥300 adult (exhibits) · 1st-floor shop zone free · Hours: 8:45am–9pm (last entry 8:30pm) · closed 29 Dec–3 Jan and on inspection days

Tip: The front garden with its pond is free and is the best photo spot. The building closed for an inspection day on 16 November last year; check the official site if you come mid-month.

3. 11:10–11:40

Sapporo Clock Tower

Built in 1878 as a drill hall for the agricultural college, its clock has struck the hours since 1881; inside is a small history museum and the clock mechanism.

Price: ¥350 adult · Hours: 8:45am–5:10pm (last entry 5pm) · closed 1–3 Jan

Tip: It is smaller than people expect and sits among office towers. For a front-on photo, cross the street to the raised viewing spot opposite.

4. 11:55–12:55

Nijo Market · seafood lunch

A century-old market just across the Sosei River with crab, sea urchin and salmon roe stalls and small rice-bowl (kaisendon) counters.

Price: Free entry · pay per dish · Hours: About 7am–6pm · restaurants keep their own hours

Tip: Check the price board before you order: crab and uni are sold by weight and can be expensive. Shops have their own closing days.

5. 13:00–14:15

Tanukikoji Shopping Street

A covered shopping street about 900 m long, running seven blocks west from the river, with drugstores, souvenir shops and old cafés; it stays dry in rain and snow.

Price: Free · Hours: Most shops about 10am–8pm (check)

Tip: Bring your passport for tax-free shopping and keep receipts. Look for the small Tanuki shrine inside the arcade.

6. 14:25–15:20

Odori Park

A 1.5 km strip of lawns, trees and fountains that splits the city into north and south; it hosts the Snow Festival in February and the White Illumination from late November.

Price: Free · Hours: Open all day

Tip: From 20 November 2026 the White Illumination lights blocks 1–6 after dark and the Munich Christmas Market opens in block 2. Earlier in the month the park is quieter, with the last autumn leaves.

7. 15:30–16:40

Sapporo TV Tower at sunset

The tower at the east end of Odori Park looks straight down the park to the western hills; in November the sun sets at about 4:00–4:30pm.

Price: ¥1,200 adult · Hours: 9am–10pm (last entry 9:50pm) · closed on inspection days

Tip: Arrive 20–30 minutes before sunset and stay until the city lights come on. The big digital clock on the tower is the classic photo from the park below.

8. 16:55–19:00

Susukino at night

Sapporo's neon district around the Susukino crossing and its famous whisky sign, with lanes of miso-ramen counters, Genghis Khan lamb grills and soup curry.

Price: Free to walk · pay per dish · Hours: Restaurants mostly from about 5pm

Tip: Choose places with prices posted and ignore street touts. Ramen Yokocho and the side lanes are busiest from 7pm; the subway is right under the crossing.

Day 2 · Otaru: A canal town of stone warehouses and music boxes

Take the JR from Sapporo to Otaru (about 35–50 min, ¥800). Breakfast at the market beside the station, the old Temiya railway line, the Bank of Japan's stone branch, the canal and its warehouses, glass and sweet shops along Sakaimachi, the steam clock and the music box museum, then back to the canal as the gas lamps come on.

A short, sloping market lane one minute from Otaru Station, with crab, scallops and rice-bowl counters that open early.

2. 09:50–10:15

Former Temiya Line

Hokkaido's first railway, opened in 1880 to carry coal to Otaru port; about 1.6 km of the old track is now a walking path through town.

Tip: Walk a few hundred metres along the rails where they cross Chuo-dori. Rails and sleepers get slippery with frost or snow; wear shoes with grip.

3. 10:25–11:15

Bank of Japan Otaru Museum

The stone-and-brick former Bank of Japan branch from 1912, centre of the old 'Wall Street of the North', with its vault and banking hall open as a free museum.

Price: Free · Hours: 9:30am–5pm Apr–Nov (last entry 4:30pm) · closed Wednesdays

Tip: Closed on Wednesdays: on that day spend the time on the canal and Sakaimachi instead. Try lifting the block of ¥100 million in notes inside.

4. 11:25–12:10

Otaru Canal

The canal finished in 1923, lined with stone warehouses from the herring and trading boom; the walk along the water is about 1 km.

About 900 m of Meiji-era stone and wooden merchant houses now filled with glass workshops, sweet shops and seafood grills.

Märchen Crossroads & steam clock

The five-way crossing at the south end of Sakaimachi, with a Canadian-made steam clock that whistles a tune every 15 minutes.

Otaru Music Box Museum

A 1912 brick building packed with thousands of music boxes on two floors, from tiny ones to antique cylinders.

Price: Free entry · Hours: 9am–6pm · open all year

Tip: Entry is free; ask before you wind display boxes and handle them gently. The make-your-own workshop has a separate charge (check).

8. 15:55–17:00

Otaru Canal at dusk

Sunset in November is about 4:00–4:30pm; the gas lamps along the canal come on and the warehouses glow in the water.

Price: Free · Hours: Open all day

Tip: Back to Otaru Station is about 10–12 minutes on foot (or Minami-Otaru from Märchen). Trains to Sapporo run two to three times an hour; the path can be icy after dark.

Hokkaido's main shrine, founded in 1869, in a deep forest of cedars and elms next to Maruyama Park.

The old back approach to the shrine, now a quiet street of small cafés, bakeries and design shops in low houses.

Price: Free · pay per drink · Hours: Cafés and shops mostly from about 10–11am (check)

4. 11:40–12:50

Sapporo Beer Museum

Japan's beer story in an 1890 red-brick sugar factory turned malt house, with the red star of the Hokkaido pioneers on the chimney; it reopened with new exhibits and audio guides in July 2026.

Price: Park free · Hoheikan fee not published (check on site) · Hours: Park open all day · Hoheikan hours: check

Mt. Moiwa Ropeway

A ropeway climbs from the base station to the mid station, and a small cable car carries you the last stretch to the 531 m summit.

Price: ¥2,100 round trip incl. mini cable car (2026 guide price · check on site) · Hours: 10:30am–10pm (last ride up 9:30pm) · stops in strong wind and for maintenance
